When you travel around the world, I can imagine that you will start to search about the historical places, museums, festivals and of course foods. You will always want to try something that is unique to the country. I also do the same things when I start to travel because foods are so important for me. So I decided to write for you about my food experience in Athens, Greece.
Greece has a very rich culture and history. When you look around in any city of Greece, you can feel what has been lived in the history. But not only history and culture but also foods are so rich in this beautiful country. When you check the menu in any restaurants or cafes you can see many different kinds of food. Spectacular seafood, the freshest vegetables, sanguine wines and desserts you just can’t get enough of. Greece is home to some of the world’s finest fresh ingredients and they are celebrated in a plethora of wonderful dishes. I will write my favourite Greek foods.
Gyro (Gyros): First of all if you like meat (chicken, pork, beef does not matter which one), I am sure that you will like gyro. Gyro is served to you in two types "open and close gyro". Open gyro is served on plate with tomatoes, onion, special greek yoghurt and potatoes. Close gyro is served in pita. It is so delicious and also so cheap. Open gyro costs about 2-3 euros. Close gyro is around 2 euros.
Souvlaki: The other favourite food in Athens of Greece is souvlaki. This is anything grilled on a skewer (lamb, chicken, pork, etc). There are so many ways to serve this from in a pitta with salad, chips and tzatzki to on fresh on the skewer or plated up with fried round potatoes. It s really delicious if you like to eat meat. The price is also cheap. A skewer of souvlaki is around 1.7 euros.
Greek Salad: Well, if you do not like to eat meat, no worries about it! Greek salad is very famous in the world. If you have it in Athens, it will be the most delicious salad you ever taste. It generally includes crunchy cucumber, juicy ripe tomato, olives, red onion and a giant slab of feta on top. You can add olive oil and vinegar to make it even tastier.
Moussaka : Moussaka is one of the must-try foods! It is creamy, juicy and absolutely delicious. Greek moussaka (mousaka) is one of the most popular dishes in Athens and actually all around Greece. It is served in almost every tavern and prepared in every house. Moussaka is usually served warm, not piping hot; if cut hot out of the oven, moussaka squares tend to slide apart and consequently the dish needs some resting time to firm up before serving. I am sure that you will like it.
Fried Kalamarakia: Greece is on the Mediterranian Sea and has many islands so that the country is so rich about seafoods. There are many options that you can order at a tavern! All the seafoods are delicious, but i have to say that my favourite one is fried kalamarakia. Be carefull to try fresh kalamarakia in order to get the best out of it. I do not advise you to eat frozen ones.
